How to Know When Your Concrete Pump Wear Plate Needs Replacement
2026-07-01 · Maintenance Guide
The wear plate (also called spectacle plate) and cutting ring are the highest-wear parts in any concrete pump. Here are the five signs it's time to replace them.
1. Slurry leakage at the hopper
If you see cement slurry leaking between the S-valve and wear plate, the sealing surface is worn. A small leak quickly becomes a big one because the abrasive slurry accelerates wear.
2. Pressure loss and weak pumping
Worn plates let concrete slip back between strokes. If your pump struggles to reach the boom tip on jobs it used to handle easily, check the wear parts before blaming the hydraulic system.
3. Visible grooves deeper than 2mm
Open the hopper and run your finger across the wear plate face. Grooves deeper than 2mm mean replacement time — the chrome layer is gone and the base metal wears 5x faster.
4. Increased blockages
Pressure loss from worn parts means concrete moves slower and can segregate, causing frequent pipe blockages.
5. More than 20,000-30,000 m³ pumped
Even with hard concrete, most wear plates need replacement after 20,000-30,000 cubic meters. With abrasive aggregate it can be as low as 10,000 m³.
Replace as a set
Always replace the wear plate and cutting ring together. A new ring against a worn plate (or vice versa) will not seal and destroys the new part within weeks.
